If you’re thinking about buying some new boxing gloves, or buying gloves for the boxer in your life, here are a few hints and tips that may help you go about this the right way. The number one rule when buying boxing gloves is:
NEVER BUY GLOVES UNLESS YOU’VE TRIED THEM ON.
If you don’t already know the brand, style, and size, you could be throwing away money on gloves that don’t fit properly, don’t feel comfortable, or worse, don’t protect your hands properly. Don’t forget, boxing gloves are safety equipment. You wouldn’t buy a parachute from a garage sale, so don’t risk your hands and wrists with equipment you haven’t tried or don’t trust. If you’re looking to buy boxing gloves for someone as a present, consider a gift certificate if you want to surprise them, or take them shopping with you so they can try some on.
Alternatively, if you just want to get them a new colour or just upgrade their old pair, stick to the brand, style, and size they already use.
This is why you have to be careful buying online; unless you already know and trust the brand and style, you just don’t know what you’re getting when you order that flash-looking pair of gloves from the maker that you’ve never heard of.
On a separate note, don’t automatically assume that a “big name” brand is necessarily going to mean a good quality glove. I’ve tried on famous brand gloves that were pretty disappointing. And another thing, don’t cheap out! There’s a huge difference between a $100 pair of boxing gloves and a $30 pair. I’ve tried on some cheap boxing gloves that felt about as supportive as wrapping your hands in a couple of layers of bubble-wrap. So please be careful when buying your boxing gloves; they’re an important part of your safety equipment. Make an intelligent and informed decision. If you’re not sure, talk to people who know boxing and have the experience to give you good advice.
